In Mirror in the Water, Raj Sen — a celebrated author and professor — retires to a seaside town in the UK as early-onset dementia takes hold. The last novel he is writing becomes a reckoning with his own past, told through memory, recurring dreams and hallucinations of Amrita, his first love.
In The Poisonous, Sumita Bose, a high-flying London executive, invites a shady antique dealer to view an umbrella with a poison chamber hidden in its ferrule. He wants to buy it. She has reasons of her own for refusing — and the evening ends somewhere neither of them intended.
Shinra wrote and produced the soundtrack with Arjun Selvarajah, the two credited on the film under the name Foreign Idols.
The score is built around emotive piano, restrained string writing and experimental layering, shaped to carry two tonally distinct stories under one sonic identity — a fractured, memory-led register for Mirror in the Water, and something colder and more deliberate for The Poisonous.
The Unexpected was Shinra’s first feature film score.
